
Douglas Hill is the Emeritus Professor of Horn at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, having taught there from 1974 until 2011 as an Emily Mead Baldwin-Bascom Professor in the Creative Arts, and recipient of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award for 2009. He earned his Bachelor of Music-Horn and Performer's Certificate at Indiana University, where he studied with Philip Farkas, and his Master of Music-Horn at Yale University as a student of Paul Ingraham.
Besides being a current member of the Wisconsin Brass, he has played solo horn with the Rochester Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Henry Mancini Orchestra, in addition to his 30 years with the Madison Symphony. He has worked with the Spoleto Festival Brass Quintet, the Wingra Woodwind Quintet and the American and New York Brass Quintets. Hill is featured on three solo recordings, a double CD of his original compositions, and a variety of chamber ensemble recordings.
Well known as an author and composer, his extensive publications include Extended Techniques for the Horn, Introducing the French Horn, more than 25 articles, dozens of varied original compositions and the educational video/DVD Hill on Horn. His recent comprehensive text Collected Thoughts on Teaching, Learning, Creativity and Horn Performance has garnered praise from all over the world and has become a standard text for teachers and students. Hill's most recent pedagogical publications include "Warm-ups and Maintenance Sessions for the Horn Player", "From Vibrato to Trills to Tremolos for the Horn Player", and "High Range for the Horn Player". Douglas Hill served for four years as a panelist and Chair of the Classical Music division for the youngARTS Awards and the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts centered in Miami, Florida. He has also served twice as the Wind/Brass Adjudicator for the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, twice for the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, and as the American judge for the Toulon Solo Horn Competition held in France in 1981.
Professor Hill has taught on the faculties of the Oberlin Conservatory, Aspen Music School, conservatories in Beijing and Shanghai and the Sarasota Music Festival. He was a coach for the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong. Recognized as one of only 20 international hornists to be included in the book 20th Century Brass Soloists by Michael Meckna, Hill has appeared as a soloist and clinician throughout the U.S., Germany, France and China, including numerous international, national and regional brass and horn workshops. Douglas also served as the second President and twice as a member of the Advisory Council of the International Horn Society, recently being named an Honorary Member, the highest honor bestowed by the IHS.
Douglas Hill joined the faculty at the KBHC in 2003 and we have the distinct pleasure of welcoming him back for week 2 in 2012!
